    Price of Urea Fertilizer refixed

Government has refixed the..urea price. Under the revision the mill gate price of urea has been refixed at Tk.10,000 per M.Ton @ Tk. 10.00 per Kg while the new rate will be at Tk. 10700 per M. Ton @ Tk. 10.70 per Kg. at the level of buffer stocks. Which has been effected from 10.06.08.

The rise, the first for 11 years, means urea will cost Tk10,700 a tonne at buffer level compared with previous price of Tk5,300. Even at this price, the government expected to spend Tk. 5,405 crore in subsidies in fiscal year 2009.

Announcing the revised urea prices at a press conference, Special Assistance to the Chief Adviser Mahbub Jamil said, such upward adjustment will help the state-run fertiliser factories minimise thier financial losses to some extent.

Due to low comparative price of urea fertilizer excess utilization in the field and non-farming use has been wasting and gradually decreasing the fertility and productivity of land.

Total expenditure of urea for the production of rice is 1.86% of total cost. Though the price of urea doubled the cost for rice production will be 3.72% which is a small fraction.
